How To Create Beautiful and Memorable Family Photos This Fall

Fall is a magical time of year, with its' vibrant colors and cozy atmosphere, providing the perfect background for creating beautiful and memorable family photos. The changing leaves, golden sunlight, and crisp air all contribute to a unique and picturesque setting.

  1. Choose the Right Location

When selecting a location for your fall family photoshoot, consider places that showcase the season's beauty, and/or that might be meaningful to your family! Look for parks, forests, or even your own backyard with colorful foliage.
If you live in the south where changing leaves are a long way off, you can still embrace the colorful season by getting creative with some props! Take advantage of the natural elements that fall provides, and consider artificial alternatives if the real items are not readily accessable. Our favorite props to incorporate are things like pumpkins, hay bales, or fallen leaves! These props can be used as backdrops or as accessories for your family to interact with.
  2. Dress for the Season

Coordinate your family's outfits to complement the fall colors! Earthy tones like burgundy, golden mustards, and forest greens work well. This year we have a super fun lineup of Fall Clothing that your girls are sure to love, so be sure to check out all our Fall Clothing & what is Coming Soon! Then head over to add some cute little boots and dainty lace trimmed socks to complete the perfect look for your girls!
  3. Timing is Everything

The best time to capture the essence of fall is during the golden hour, which is the hour after sunrise or before sunset. The soft, warm light during this time creates a magical glow and enhances the colors of the season. Plan your photoshoot accordingly to make the most of this natural lighting.
  4. Capture Candid Moments

Posed photos are great, but candid moments often capture the true essence of your family! Encourage your loved ones to interact naturally, whether it's playing in the leaves, sharing a laugh, or enjoying a warm beverage together. These genuine moments will create lasting memories.
  5. Hire a Professional Photographer

While smartphones have advanced cameras, hiring a professional photographer can make a significant difference in the quality of your family photos. They have the expertise to capture the perfect angles, lighting, and composition, ensuring that your photos are truly stunning. Plus, this means you can all be in the photos without having to constantly adjust a timer on a camera or phone.
  6. Edit with Care

After the photoshoot, take the time to pick out some of your favorite pictures to edit! A professional photographer will be happy to edit your favorites, but even the photos you take with your phone can be spectacular with a bit of editing. Enhance the colors, adjust the exposure, and crop if necessary. Be careful not to over-edit, as it can make the photos look unnatural. Aim for a balance that enhances the beauty of the fall season while maintaining a realistic feel.
  7. Get them printed!

Once the photos are edited just the way you want them, it’s time to think about getting some of them printed! Photobooks and large canvas prints are some of our favorite ways of keeping and cherishing memories captured in pictures. So anytime we capture an extra special moment and have an open space on the wall, we head over to smallwoodhome.com to get a large canvas print made!
